Home Decor Trends

A new year means new trends of what’s to come! Home decor and designs in 2024 are geared towards all things relaxation and cozy! It looks like a fusion of vintage charm and modern minimalism is what is in store for this year. Timeless style, textures - think brick, marble, wooden textures & arches, warmer neutrals & closed floor plans are just a few of the things gaining popularity for this year! Let’s dive in a little deeper to what’s in & what’s out for 2024!

Paint colors…
Out —
●Crisp whites, muted grays and black as the focal point.
In —
●Warmer neutrals - cream, beige, browns and rich earthy tones. Black as an accent color and especially on windows/door trim. Greige colors are still very popular, as they fall into the warmer neutral category!
●Blue, as well as shades of green (and anything moody) are all the rave for this year.
●Painting rooms all out is gaining popularity - walls, trim, doors and the ceiling all the same color. This creates an elevated & cohesive look.
●Add some fun to your room with colored furniture, accessories, artwork & rugs!

Textures…
Textures add warmth, dimension & interest to any space. They have been picking up steam the last several years & don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. You can easily add textures at a low cost in the way of throw blankets, pillows, side tables, lamps & a headboard. You can take it up a notch by adding visual interest to the ceiling with shiplap, a coffered ceiling, add beams or paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.
In —
●Feminine wallpaper with a smaller scale pattern such as floral, birds or vines. If you have ever taken wallpaper down, you may not be so quick to jump on this bandwagon!
Out —
●Shiplap is possibly making its way out of the design world (there are definitely differing opinions on this!)
●It appears we will be seeing less painted brick & more people opting to leave it exposed, both indoors & outdoors for added texture.

Kitchen…
Out —
●All-white boring kitchens. If you recently jumped on board & painted all of your kitchen cabinets white (like me), don’t panic! White cabinets will always be timeless, yet they may not be top choice in the coming year or two.
●Open shelving will most likely not be as popular this year. I don’t think a lot of people will be sad about this! The open shelving looks great, but is not super practical for storage and cleaning purposes.
●Large kitchen islands - I think there could be some debate on this one! The cost to install the island/countertops, as well as the time needed to clean the extra counter space may have some homeowners reconsidering a large island. Others may say it is worth every penny & second spent cleaning it for the extra space! They can be so versatile that I don’t see islands going away anytime soon.
In —
●Taupe and beige kitchen cabinets with shaker style doors with clean lines are what’s “in” this year.
●Appliance garages to keep your kitchen appliances & gadgets handy, yet hidden and organized for a more visual appeal.

Closed floor plans…
IN! Closed floor plans are becoming more desirable to accommodate more social seating arrangements to allow families to comfortably spend more time together in an intimate setting. This also gives you an opportunity to explore different design styles in different spaces.

Barn doors…
OUT! Again, I feel like there will be differing opinions on this one! I personally have a couple in my home & I love them! They are practical in areas where a regular door won’t fit or doesn’t make sense. If you’re wondering about the Modern Farmhouse style in general…it’s not out, but also not “in” if it’s not relevant to your location. If you live in an urban area, it may not be as fitting as if you live in a more rural area.

Wood Flooring…
In — Mid-tone, oak and white-washed
Out — Avoid gray undertone, as well as an orange or brassy-tone

Arches…
IN! They add charm and frame in important features that you want to be highlighted. They have been around forever & can many times be found in older homes and add so much character!

Tile…
In —
●Herringbone patterns. Flooring, backsplash & tile all look great in this pattern.
●Unique stonework for backsplashes are making a comeback.
Out —
●Subway tile. I personally think this is a classic & timeless design that never really goes “out of style”, but may just not be as popular this year or next.

Windows…
The bigger the better! The natural light paired with the neutral colors makes for a very warm and inviting space!

Furniture and decor…
In —
●More rounded furniture compared to the mid-century modern style that has been recently popular. Everything is about cozy & relaxing this year!
●“Collected style” with a wide variety of design elements, including different textures, patterns, colors & finishes. Mixing old with new is where it’s at! I love that this is a “trend” because I have been decorating my home like this for years! Nothing beats going to local markets, antique stores and thrift stores to find treasures to repurpose! This is where I have found some of my favorite pieces. Bonus…they are unique & not likely that anyone will have one quite like it.
Out —
●Matching furniture sets
●Word signs and inspirational quotes are on their way out.

I hope these trends inspired some new ideas if you are looking to make some changes in your home this year. Your home should be a place that you love and feel at peace, no matter if it’s following the newest trends or not! That’s the beauty of your own home, it echoes your personality and tells your unique story! If you’re looking to sell your home in the foreseeable future & want to update some things, I would recommend following along with the trends and keeping things neutral. Not all trends are going to fit your style, but it is fun to see what’s happening in the design world and where your home fits in!
